What type of PD does the STA offer?

While recruiting for the Alpha Cohort of the Science Teacher Academy, MDM hosted two preview events to engage teachers in hands-on learning and let them discover the types of professional development that the STA offers.

May 22, 2023 Preview Event:

Sessions included:

  • A lunch conversation with Maine scientists on how they were inspired by teachers and how their education played a role in their STEM journey,

  • A workshop on teaching about the upcoming solar eclipse in your classroom,

  • A discussion about the importance of incorporating science and culture into the curriculum for Native American students,

  • A workshop on incorporating authentic, hands-on science learning into your classroom, and

  • A conversation with teachers from across the state about creating Connected Learning Ecosystems and working with your communities to serve learners.

November 18, 2022 Preview Event:

Dr. Buckner, Educator Professional Development Specialist for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, joined staff from Maine Discovery Museum and Challenger Learning Center for a day of professional development that was out of this world! Teachers learned about free NASA resources, engaged in activities they could lead in their classrooms, and completed one of CLC's mission simulations. Time was also spent discussing interdisciplinary connections between science, ELA, and math.
